“Joe Bowden – Roots: Tales of the Urban Yoda (Independent, 2020) The opening track grabs you by the throat; it’s so funky! Robi Botos plays keyboards like nobody else. Andrew Stewart is laying down a wicked bass groove. Joe Bowden’s drums are lean and groovy. Doodlin’ is the perfect opening track that leaves you wanting more. What a trio. Groovin’ High augments the trio with trumpet, alto sax and tenor sax. Second Skin rolls along with some shimmering Rhodes by Botos, a fat groove from the rhythm section and more punchy horns. Sentimental is a fresh take on Ellington’s In a Sentimental Mood, with Michael Shand (keyboards) and Rich Brown (bass), and featuring the lush vocals of Alana Bridgewater (channelling elements of Chaka Khan and Sade.) This is a standout track that inspired me to replay it three times in a row. Other highlights include Botos’ percolatin clavinet on The Seventies, Golden Rule, Bustin’ Loose and All For You. This is a feel-good record that needs to be in your collection.” - David Reed
